EMDR Therapy Part 1: All you need to know

What is EMDR??

= Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. A fairly new interactive psychological treatment used for Post traumatic stress disorder. The overall aim, is to dissociate your emotions with certain memories/traumas we may have experienced.

How does it work?

Recovery is achieved by reliving traumatic experiences, whilst concentrating on eye movement, or bilateral stimulation’s. This can help us think about certain memories, without having such a strong emotional connection with them; consequently reducing symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks, panic attacks etc.

How long does it take?

Simply put, this cannot be known for definite. It depends on the resources available in your area. For example in the UK, most psychological therapies on the NHS are only available to patients for an average of 6 sessions.

It works around a timeline of sessions, a total of 8. The first few sessions are mostly focused on finding out about your specific needs, what you need help with and the traumas you’re facing. Then a timeline of events is created, throughout, your therapist will ensure no sessions are triggering, or cause any unnecessary distress. Finally: reprocessing. Here you will relive memories, and perform specific eye moments, switching between reliving, and focusing on our emotions. The therapist will work through any traumas until you’re comfortable with the memories not having such an impact. All will be discussed and rounded off to finish, where you will be able to express any concerns etc.

Is this right for me?

Speaking to a GP or professional first is advised, as they can refer you to the correct psychologist for the required treatment. Some people go down this route as other options such as CBT or person centred therapy may not have worked. Also speak to an appropriate adult regarding your feelings, it can be a distressing therapy and you need to be prepared to experience those feelings again to get through. There are more links below including more information about how this works, and whether this is the right option for you.
